Types of Wendy houses

  • Storage Wendy houses

For garden tools, bikes, camping gear and anything that doesn't fit in the garage.

  • Workshops

A bench, shelving and a window for light. Add electricity for power tools.

  • Home offices

A quiet, separate workspace. Insulation and electricity make it usable year-round.

  • Garden rooms and studios

Glazed doors and a veranda for hobbies, art, music or a reading room.

  • Larger Wendy houses

Bigger rooms for guests or teenagers. For permanent living, a 1 bedroom Nutec house is usually the better fit.

  • Nutec Wendy houses

Fibre-cement cladding instead of timber, for less maintenance. Learn more.

Wooden or Nutec Wendy house?

Wooden Wendy houses have a warm, natural look and are often the more affordable option upfront. Timber needs regular sealing or painting, plus protection from moisture and termites, to keep it in good condition.

Nutec Wendy houses use fibre-cement boards that don't rot and aren't eaten by termites. You'll repaint them from time to time, but there's less ongoing maintenance than with timber.

If the Wendy house will get heavy use, stand in a damp spot or be used as an office, the Nutec option is worth comparing.

Sizes, foundations and finishes

There's no single standard size, so start with what you want to fit inside and how much yard you can give up. Send us your measurements and we'll suggest a size.

  • Size

Measure the space, allowing room to walk around the building and for the door to open.

  • Foundation

Wendy houses can stand on brick pillars, paving or a concrete slab. Keeping timber off the ground protects it from moisture.

  • Roof

Corrugated or IBR sheeting, or a shingle-look finish. Overhangs help protect the walls from rain.

  • Doors and windows

Single or double doors, glazed doors for garden rooms, and windows for light and airflow.

  • Veranda

A small covered porch adds shade and makes a garden room far more usable.

  • Floor and electricity

A solid floor for offices and workshops. Electrical work must be done by a registered electrician.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need building plans for a Wendy house?

It depends on the size, how you'll use it and your municipality. Smaller garden structures are often treated as minor building work with a simpler process, while larger or habitable ones usually need full plans. Check with your municipality before you build.

Can I live in a Wendy house?

Some people use larger Wendy houses as living space, but a room people live in has extra requirements for ventilation, light, fire safety and sanitation, and usually needs approved plans. For permanent living, a Nutec home is generally the better choice.

How do I maintain a wooden Wendy house?

Seal or paint the timber regularly, keep it off the ground, clear gutters and debris, and check for termite activity. A Nutec Wendy house needs less maintenance.

Can you add electricity to a Wendy house?

Tell us you need electricity when you ask for a quote. Electrical installations must be done by a registered electrician, who issues a certificate of compliance.

What size Wendy house should I get?

Measure what needs to fit inside, such as a desk, a bench or storage shelves, and add space to move around. Then check how much yard space you have. We can help you decide.
