Log Homes

A log home has a character that's hard to match: warm timber, deep verandas and a look that suits the bushveld, the mountains and the countryside.

We build log homes and smaller log cabins for customers who want that natural feel, whether it's a weekend getaway or a home on a farm.

Where log homes work well

  • Holiday and weekend homes

Suited to dam, mountain and bushveld settings, such as around Hartbeespoort or in the Mpumalanga Lowveld.

  • Farms and smallholdings

A main house or guest house that blends into a rural setting.

  • Guest accommodation

Self-catering cottages on a larger property. Check zoning and tourism requirements.

  • Country living

For people who want a timber home rather than a painted, modern finish.

What to know before building a log home

Timber treatment

Structural timber in South Africa is treated according to its exposure. External timber above the ground needs a higher hazard-class treatment than interior timber. Ask what treatment class is used in your quote.

Maintenance

Log walls need regular sealing or staining, especially on sides that get strong sun and rain. Wide roof overhangs and verandas reduce how often you'll need to do it.

Termites and moisture

Keep timber off the ground on a proper foundation, and make sure water drains away from the building. This matters most in warmer, humid areas.

Insurance

Some insurers rate timber buildings differently from brick or fibre-cement. Speak to your insurer early.

Log home or Nutec home?

Both can be comfortable, full-time homes. Which suits you comes down to look, setting and maintenance:

  • Choose a log home for the natural timber character, particularly in rural, mountain and holiday settings.
  • Choose a Nutec home for a modern painted finish, less ongoing maintenance and suburban plots.

Not sure? Ask us to quote both for your site.

Frequently asked questions

Are log homes suitable for full-time living?

Yes, when they're built and approved as dwellings, with proper insulation, services and maintenance.

How often does a log home need maintenance?

It depends on exposure: walls in full sun and driving rain need attention more often than sheltered ones. Plan for regular inspections and resealing.

Do log homes need building plans?

Yes. A log home used as a dwelling needs municipal building plan approval, just like any other home.

Do you build log homes in Mpumalanga and Limpopo?

We take on log home projects in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Send us your location so we can confirm.
