Nutec Homes

A Nutec home gives you a proper, comfortable place to live, without the cost, mess and waiting of a conventional brick build.

We build Nutec houses from compact one-bedroom units to three-bedroom family homes, for customers in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

What is a Nutec home?

A Nutec home is built with a structural frame that is clad in fibre-cement boards instead of brick and plaster. "Nutec" is the name most people in South Africa use for these boards, which is why the homes are known as Nutec houses.

A typical Nutec house has:

  • a timber or light steel frame on a prepared foundation, often raised off the ground
  • fibre-cement cladding on the outside, which can be painted any colour
  • insulation inside the wall and roof cavities
  • internal wall and ceiling linings, ready for finishing
  • a sheeted roof, either flat, mono-pitch or gabled

The exact specification for your home, including frame, insulation, internal finishes and roofing, is set out in your quote so you know exactly what you're getting.

Why people choose Nutec homes

  • Often more affordable

A Nutec house is often less expensive than a brick home of similar size, depending on the specification and your site.

  • Low maintenance

Fibre-cement boards don't rot and aren't eaten by termites the way untreated timber can be. Repainting from time to time keeps them looking good.

  • Dry construction

There's no bricklaying or plastering, so there are fewer wet trades on site and less waiting for materials to cure.

  • Flexible sizes

Start small with a one-bedroom unit, or build a three-bedroom home. Layouts are planned around your plot.

  • A modern look

Clean lines, large windows and painted finishes. Nutec homes don't have to look like temporary buildings.

  • Less site disruption

A good choice for backyard builds where you want to keep mess, noise and deliveries to a minimum.

  • Granny flat

A room for guests, hobbies or relaxing, with a deck or veranda that opens onto the garden.

  • Small home

For people who want to downsize, retire or live simply, without giving up a proper kitchen and bathroom.

Customise your Nutec house

These are the choices that make the biggest difference to how your home looks, how it works and what it costs. We'll go through them with you when you ask for a quote.

  • Size and layout

  • Windows and doors

Sliding doors, stacking doors, window sizes and positions for light, ventilation and privacy.

Flat and mono-pitch roofs for a modern look, or gabled roofs for a more traditional one.

Frequently asked questions

Are Nutec homes durable?

Fibre-cement cladding is resistant to rot and termites, and handles South African weather well when it's properly installed and painted. How long a Nutec home lasts also depends on the frame, the foundation, the roof and how well it's maintained, which is why the full specification matters.

Can I live in a Nutec house permanently?

Yes. Many people live in Nutec homes full-time. For a permanent home, plan for proper insulation, ceilings, a bathroom and kitchen, and make sure the building has municipal approval.

How long does it take to build a Nutec home?

It depends on the size of the house, site preparation, municipal approvals and how busy the schedule is. Dry construction avoids the waiting that comes with brickwork and plaster. Ask us for a timeline with your quote.

Can I customise a Nutec home?

Yes. You can change the size, layout, windows and doors, roof style, verandas and colours. See the customisation options above, then send us your ideas.

Can Nutec homes be used as rental units?

They're a popular choice for backyard rental units and granny flats. Before you build, confirm your property's zoning allows a second dwelling and get the required approvals from your municipality.

Do Nutec homes need building plans?

Habitable buildings generally need approved plans under the National Building Regulations. Your municipality will tell you exactly what's required for your property.
